Pregnant, hairy and proud
The hairy shrimp is only a few millimetres long (those really are grains of sand) and is a particular challenge to photograph. When you first see one it looks like a ball of fluff, just some dirt on a rock. My first thought was "what on earth is the guide showing me here?!" Then as I watched it rock back and forth in the current, I slowly began to make out the shape of the tail laden with eggs. Then I saw the tiny eye. At that point it was time to position my snooted strobe and try to give this lady a little bit of a glow.
